Continuing Education Units and the Proposed Change to License Expiration Dates

NMDA is aware of concerns related to Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and the proposed expiration date change to Pesticide Applicator licenses.

The upcoming license renewal cycle would be a transition period, and we would need to verify that CEU courses attended by some licensees are applied to the license year they are in and which one they would qualify to renew for (2026 or 2027). Beyond the first January 31st expiration, the system NMDA uses would automatically assign CEUs for the next license year. CEU and renewal paperwork are valid and processed based on the postmark or email date and not on the date received by NMDA. The postmark and email date must be before or up to an expiration date to be valid.

Scenario 1: 2026 and 2027 potential impact

I already attended a CEU course in 2025 to renew my license for 2026.

Will my 2025 CEUs count only for renewal up until January 31, 2026?

Answer: Yes

What if I then:

Attend a CEU course in January of 2026, will I receive credit to renew my license for 2027?

Answer: Yes

Scenario 2: 2026 and 2027 potential impact

I have not attended a CEU course in 2025 to renew my license for 2026.

Can I attend a CEU course in January of 2026 to renew my license for 2026?

Answer: Yes

Will these CEUs count for renewal in 2027.

Answer: No, you will need to attend a class between February 2026 and January 31st 2027 for that renewal period.

For this initial transition period, either scenario benefits a licensee and CEU course sponsor. With licensees accustomed to December 31st expiration, another month available to obtain CEUs will result in an increase in course participation in January.

Note: There is no change to the double fee period for those licenses that have a fee associated with them. Double fees apply for renewal 30 days after an expiration date. CEUs however can only be obtained up to the expiration date of a license.
