MORA, N.M.A post-fire agricultural workshop will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at the American Legion Pavilion, located at 268 State Highway 434 in Mora, New Mexico.

The workshop is offered by New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service, including the Southwest Border Food Protection and Emergency Preparedness Center, which is a collaborative effort between the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and Extension.

The following topics related to the post-fire and current flooding landscape will be discussed:

  • Livestock management
  • Soil health
  • Stress management
  • Water quality
  • Navigating the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency systems

Tom Dean and Marshal Wilson, co-directors of NMSU’s Southwest Border Food Protection and Emergency Preparedness Center, emphasized the need to maintain outreach efforts during the post-fire recovery period.

“The community has been devastated by both wildfires and flooding, and we need to continue to provide information to our fellow New Mexicans who’ve been affected by these disasters, so they can make appropriate management decisions,” said Dean.

“Whether it’s learning about livestock management, soil health or the importance of mental health and stress management, our goal is for attendees to walk away with valuable knowledge,” said Wilson, who also serves as assistant director of NMDA’s Agricultural and Production Services Division.
