New Mexico unveils one-stop New World screwworm website
State agencies centralize resources, updates and response guidance
ALBUQUERQUE – New Mexicans now have a single, state-run website with up-to-date information about New World screwworm, including how to identify infestations, protect people and animals, and report suspected cases.
New World screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly whose larvae infest open wounds and feed on living tissue, causing rapid, often fatal damage if untreated. It primarily affects livestock and wildlife but can also affect pets and, in rare cases, humans.
The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA), in partnership with state health, livestock, and wildlife agencies, has streamlined resources on ScrewwormNM.org, providing step-by-step guidance on recognizing infestations, reporting suspected cases, and contacting experts. If NWS is detected in New Mexico, the site will be the state’s primary source for updates and response actions.
“This website provides clear, accurate information in one place from the agencies leading the response,” said New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte. “Be alert, not alarmed — early detection and strong communication are vital to protecting animals and public health.”
“Cases in animals can deteriorate rapidly if not addressed early,” said Dr. Samantha Holeck, state veterinarian with the New Mexico Livestock Board. “Having guidance in one place supports faster diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and timely reporting, all key to limiting spread.”
The New Mexico platform complements federal resources at screwworm.gov, the one-stop website providing consistent messaging and nationwide coordination.
