NM proclaims 2026 National Year of the Woman in Agriculture
NMDA joins statewide and global recognition of women’s contributions
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has proclaimed 2026 as the “National Year of the Woman in Agriculture” throughout the state, underscoring the essential role women play in agriculture, food systems and rural communities in New Mexico.
The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) also joins the global community in celebrating 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, as declared by the United Nations.
The international designation recognizes the significant contributions of women in agriculture worldwide. In New Mexico, women are farmers, ranchers, land stewards, entrepreneurs and leaders who help shape the state’s agricultural economy and heritage. From multi-generational operations to innovative new enterprises, women contribute to the strength, diversity and resilience of New Mexico agriculture.
“Women have always been at the heart of New Mexico agriculture,” said New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte. “This international recognition gives us the opportunity to celebrate their achievements, amplify their voices, and continue building pathways that support women farmers and ranchers across our state.”
As part of this ongoing commitment, NMDA launched the Matriarchs of New Mexico Agriculture campaign in May 2025 to honor women who have devoted their lives to advancing agriculture and supporting their families, communities and industry through leadership, mentorship and advocacy.
A matriarch is defined as “a head of family or tribe” or “an older woman who is powerful within a family or organization.” Through this campaign, NMDA recognizes women who embody these ideals and whose lifelong dedication has helped shape the future of New Mexico agriculture.
NMDA will highlight the stories and legacies of remarkable women throughout 2026 in celebration of the National and International Year of the Woman in Agriculture.
